American Sign Language

American Sign Language Experience

Prior to moving to Seattle in Fall 2019, I was attending Oakland Community College to learn American Sign Language (ASL) with goals of becoming a Sign Language Interpreter. Due to financial reasons and receiving a job offer in Seattle, WA, I was unable to continue the program. In the 1.5 years I participated in this program, I completed ASL 1 - ASL 4 and other classes on Deaf History and Culture. I also had to attend Deaf events in the community, which offered me an immersive experience on navigating the world with language barriers. I am ver grateful for my experiences.

Washington State has one of the largest Deaf populations in the U.S. I would love to continue learning American Sign Language while in Seattle, WA. My goal is use American Sign Language to to bridge communication with the Deaf world and the hearing world, work with infants and non-verbal youth, and incorporate Sign Language into my art work. I am enthralled by the Deaf Community and the beauty of this expressive language.

Deafness is NOT a disability, but a strong expressive community.

Below are some assignment videos of when I was a student in the program.

ASL Vlog

This video is a reflection of my participation in the interpreter program. I realized I wanted to focus more on learning the language, but the classes I were in at the time were focusing on more interpreter-based lessons. At the time, I wanted to go to Gallaudet University, a predominately Deaf university, to get a more immersive experience.

ASL News Story

This video is to interpret a news story. I chose a story about a pilot getting arrested for flying a plane while intoxicated.
